Revealing more of the content from the level as it progresses, with a main focus around this area.
Its still the same level, but there is a lot more going on with additional background elements being gradually filled in. The waterfalls are meant to transition relatively smoothly into the scene and flow with the rock formations not being too much of an oddity. I wanted to do more with differing levels of water, but it may have to be pushed off into more of a background element for it to be aesthetically appealing.
One of the important features to design is believability. The waterfall wouldn’t seem nearly as impactful if there wasn’t some kind of effect at the end of it. The combination of different lighting along with a dark overcast in the background helps to sell the scene.
The overcast / cloud effect gave me some difficulty at first, since I wanted it to be completely dark in those areas. After lots of researching, I ended up modifying the provided Unreal content of a cloud since it was very efficient, and tweaked the values as needed.
The water I’m using is from the water planes pack of Unreal, with transparency. Normally each water plane is just a simple square, so to get the curved effect I had to appropriately tile the water piece by piece. Hopefully the edges are very well hidden!
