Blowtorch

BlowtorchMore or less finished the small blowtorch I’ve been working on.

As for the process:

I started out with just the idea of making it, before jumping into Zbrush to flesh out my idea. I’ve never held a blowtorch, nor do I have specs on the size or any exact design. I did make sure to look for some reference images, and went with a mixed design that seemed appealing.

About halfway through the modeling process, I ran into a slight snag. The saved file for my model had one of subtools go missing the moment after it was loaded up. At the time, I tried to look for a workaround while also venting on my Twitter.

Did it disappear..
or was it never there to begin with?

Thankfully, I got the geometry back in question thanks to Zbrush’s quicksaves. The subtool wasn’t hidden or deleted, so I am still lost as to what happened.

I wanted this model to function in multiple parts, so I separated it into three distinct parts. The can is attachable to a movable connector for the rest of the blowtorch structure, so if animated, it would be simple to make it seem realistic when attaching a stray can in a game.

After the earlier trouble with the modeling, the rest of the process was a breeze. I opted for a quick but sometimes dirty way to do my UVs, automatically unwrapping them before texturing the model in 3D Coat.

An interactive 3D render will be available on my home page.
